Measurement of Time and Frequency Stability in SDH Equipment Clocks: Methodology and Experimental Results

In this paper, the model of clock timing signal is first introduced, together with some basic quantities defined in telecommunications timing applications. Moreover, the time-domain quantities defined in ETSI and ITU-T standard bodies, for telecommunications clock stability specification, are listed and their standard estimators, recommended for time and frequency measurements, are provided. A wide set of measurement results is finally provided, detailing also the measurement procedure. These experimental results are an overview on the actual performance of clocks installed in Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) equipment largely deployed in transmission networks.
